Editing your website.
Your site runs on WordPress, the same editor we use. Here is everything a busy owner needs: how to log in, change words and pictures, add a page, and what to leave to us.
Logging in
Go to your website address followed by /wp-admin/ (for example yourbusiness.co.uk/wp-admin/). Your username is in your launch email. The first time, use the “Set your password” link your website emailed you when we created your account; if it has expired, click “Lost your password?” on the login page and a fresh link arrives within a minute. Check your junk folder if it does not.
Changing words
- In the left menu choose Pages, then click the page name.
- Click the text you want to change and type. Headings and paragraphs are separate blocks; click into the one you need.
- Press Update (top right). Open the page in a new tab to check it. Nothing changes on the live site until you press Update.
Changing a picture
- Click the image, then Replace in the small toolbar above it, and upload a new one.
- Use photos no bigger than about 2,000 pixels wide and under 1 MB where you can; phones take much larger photos than a website needs. WordPress makes smaller copies automatically, but smaller originals keep the site fast.
- Add a short description in the “Alt text” box: what is in the picture. It helps people using screen readers and helps Google.
Adding a page or a post
Pages → Add New for something permanent such as a new service. Posts → Add New for news, updates and articles, if your site has a news section. Give it a clear title, write in short paragraphs, add a picture, and press Publish. New pages are not in the menu automatically: tell us and we will add it, or go to Appearance → Editor → Navigation if you are comfortable there.
Prices, hours and contact details
These are usually plain text on the relevant page, so edit them like any other words. If we built a special section for them (a price table or an opening-hours block), click it and the editable fields appear in the right-hand panel.
Leave these to us
- Plugins and updates. On a care plan we do them for you, tested first. Otherwise ask us; updates occasionally break things and we would rather fix them before you see them.
- Appearance → Editor beyond the menu. The design is built there and it is easy to undo something by accident.
- Settings. One setting (“Discourage search engines”) can hide your whole site from Google.
If something goes wrong
Every page keeps a history: in the editor, open the settings panel (the cog, top right) and look for Revisions to restore an earlier version. If you are stuck, email us with the page name and what you were trying to do; small fixes are quick, and on a care plan they are included.
Need a hand with your site?
Care plans cover updates, backups and small changes every month; pay as you go covers the odd job.
